James Gunn Answers One of I Am Groot TV Show’s Biggest Questions

Groot and Baby Groot the same being, or just relatives? James Gunn finally gives Guardians of the Galaxy and I Am Groot fans a definitive answer.

James Gunn has finally answered one of the biggest questions about the upcoming I Am Groot TV show. I Am Groot is an animated series of shorts that premiered exclusively on Disney+, following Guardians of the Galaxy's Baby Groot. The series was announced in December of 2020, and takes place in between Guardians of the Galaxy and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, following Baby Groot on various short adventures. I Am Groot is a part of the MCU's Phase 4 and was released on August 10, 2022.

the beloved character Groot sacrificed himself in order to save his friends. While Groot died, Rocket saved a piece of Groot's tree-like body, potting a sapling that grew into a younger version of him. Affectionately known as Baby Groot, the young alien grows up throughout the MCU films, appearing in later movies as a bratty teenager. However, since Baby Groot's first appearance in Guardians of the Galaxy, fans have been left to wonder whether he is a clone of the original Groot, Groot's offspring, or something else entirely.

Gunn further clarified in replies to the original post that Baby Groot is "OG Groot's progeny," and that while he doesn't have the original Groot's memories, "he would only be learning these things in the same way your mother would tell you stories about your departed father." Gunn says that, while Baby Groot might have grown from a piece of the original Groot's body, Baby Groot is one-hundred-percent an entirely different being. Gunn also mentioned to one fan on Twitter that I Am Groot isn't the first instance of clarifying Groot and Baby Groot's relationship, as, during the famous button scene in Guardians Vol. 2, Groot would have known the difference between the buttons, whereas Baby Groot clearly did not.

Groot and Baby Groot are completely separate entities, Gunn's stance on the long-standing question is clear. Though Baby Groot might not have the memories and experiences of his predecessor, growing up with the Guardians as his family will give him plenty of opportunities to hear about Groot and to have new and exciting experiences of his own. I Am Groot's first five episodes are now available to watch on Disney+, with five more episodes currently in the works.
